Community Involvement

Every once in a while, as the Zion Archives committee is making copies of old documents, something catches our eye, such as this entry in the Minutes of a church council meeting held on February 1, 1951:

"Discussion was held as to whether we should leave the town use the church basement as a bomb shelter. Clair McElwain made the motion to let them use it as a shelter. Ronald Holman 2nd."

This was very early in the Cold War. Although President Truman announced in 1949 that the Soviets had detonated their first atomic bomb, the Office of Civil Defense did not promote bomb shelters until after the launch of Sputnik in 1957. One of the tactics recommended for avoiding radiation exposure after an atomic bomb was to hide in a basement with thick walls, which our church certainly has. The other equally effective tactic (for schoolchildren) was to hide under a desk and cover your head!

There are many other entries in Zion Lutheran history of community involvement. That tradition continues to this day. Zion Lutheran has always opened its doors for community meetings, dinners or special activities. Members participate in functions such as Music in the Park, Community Coffee Shop and Memorial Day. Our local benevolence has helped those coping with fire loss, job loss or other hard times. In addition, the many individual acts of kindness and the unnoticed deeds, done quietly and without fanfare, speak to the community in ways we may not know.

Is our church a welcoming place for all? Do we set an example for those who are apathetic or cynical toward Christianity/churchgoing, perhaps changing them because of our individual actions? Is the community thankful for our presence here? Whether it's providing shelter from bombs or providing a kind word, we can be tangible witnesses to God's love by our actions right here, right now.
